OUR HISTORY

A Tradition of Faith, Education, and Growth

St Albert’s College, located in Armidale, New South Wales, is a Catholic residential college affiliated with the University of New England (UNE). Since its founding in 1952, the College has been a cornerstone of the university community, providing a supportive and nurturing environment for students to live, study, and grow.

The College was established to cater to the increasing number of students attending UNE, many of whom were far from home and in need of a safe, community-focused place to live. Named after St Albert the Great, the patron saint of students and scholars, St Albert’s College has always aimed to foster a balance between academic achievement, spiritual development, and personal well-being.

Albert the Great (c. 1200–1280), a German Dominican friar and scholar, is renowned for his contributions to both theology and science. A pioneering figure in scholasticism, he integrated Aristotle's philosophy with Christian doctrine, influencing the development of medieval thought.

Known for his wide-ranging academic pursuits, Albert made advancements in fields such as natural sciences, astronomy, and ethics, and mentored Thomas Aquinas, one of the most influential theologians in history.

Canonised as a saint and declared a Doctor of the Church, Albert's legacy of intellectual rigor and faith continues to inspire St. Albert’s College, which embodies his commitment to academic excellence and Christian values.
