A Lasting Legacy

BEQUESTS

A bequest is a powerful way to leave a lasting impact on St Albert’s College, supporting the future of our students and the continued growth of our community. Whether you wish to leave a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or direct your legacy to a particular cause, there are several ways you can make a meaningful contribution. Below, we’ve outlined the most common types of bequests, along with the necessary clauses to include in your will.

SARAH'S STORY

When Sarah Mitchell first stepped onto the St Albert’s College campus as a Fresher, she was unsure if she could afford to continue her studies at university. A first-generation university student, Sarah had worked hard to gain a place at university, but the financial strain of tuition, accommodation, and living expenses weighed heavily on her shoulders.

That all changed when she was awarded the John and Mary Doe Scholarship, established through a generous bequest left by former alumni of St Albert’s College. The scholarship, which covers a portion of Sarah’s tuition fees, gave her the financial relief she so desperately needed. This bequest allowed Sarah to focus on her studies and engage more fully in the Albies community.

Thanks to the support from this bequest-funded scholarship, Sarah thrived academically. She joined the college’s leadership program, took on mentorship roles for other students, and was involved in organizing fundraising initiatives that would eventually help future students in similar positions. Sarah even went on to complete an internship with a prestigious law firm, a direct result of the opportunities she could now access without worrying about financial constraints.

By the time Sarah graduated, she not only had a law degree in hand, but also a deep sense of gratitude for the scholarship that had made it all possible. "Without the support of the John and Mary Doe Scholarship, I honestly don’t know where I’d be today," Sarah reflects. "It wasn’t just about the financial support — it was knowing that someone believed in my potential enough to help me succeed."

Sarah is now an advocate for the importance of giving back, and she regularly speaks to current students about the power of scholarships and philanthropy. She’s committed to one day establishing her own scholarship in honour of her journey, continuing the legacy of support that helped her unlock her future.

Sarah’s story is just one example of how a bequest-funded scholarship can transform not only the life of an individual student but also the entire Albies community. These gifts continue to create opportunities for students who may otherwise face obstacles to achieving their dreams, ensuring that the values of education, community, and support are carried forward for generations to come.
